As a full-time worker bee, sometimes I'm not able to travel as much as I would like.

If you're anything like me you probably sometimes get an unshakeable urge to just leave everything behind for a new adventure.

I call this the 'travel itch'. Others call it wanderlust.

These are times when I just want to pack up and go, whether it be trekking the Inca Trail or surfing in Costa Rica.

But what do you do when you aren't able to leave due to commitments such as work, family or even finances?

In this post I'll give you 10 tips to satisfy your wanderlust when you can’t actually travel.

10. Read Travel Inspiration Books

The thing about books is that you can completely immerse yourself in a different world.

It's one of the best escapes for me when I want to forget about 'normal life' and plunge into 'fantasy life'. When the itch to travel strikes, I love reading travel inspiration books (i.e. books where the author talks about their journey in XYZ country) or even guide books. Here are a few favourites:

9. Watch Travel TV Shows & Movies

Similar to books, movies and TV shows are a great way to get lost in a different world.

My favourite is watching movies or TV shows that showcase travel or a specific destination. I love Scott and Justin from Departures who go on all sorts of adventures around the world. Watching them eat scorpion in Thailand or cured shark in Iceland satisfies my wanderlust by making me feel part of the adventure. A few must-watch wanderlust movies are What a Girl Wants, Chasing Liberty, A Good Year, Under the Tuscan Sun and Before Sunrise (I'm seeing a chick flick trend here…)

8. Browse Through Travel-Themed Pinterest Boards

I just love Pinterest!

Whenever I'm feeling fernweh, I browse Pinterest for travel themed boards.

I find it's a great way to read general travel tips (in preparation for your next getaway someday), discover awesome travel blogs and see amazing photos of places around the globe. To save all these ideas for your future travels, you can even create your own boards. I recommend checking out these travel-themed boards or the 'Travel' category in Pinterest:

7. Build Wish Lists on AirBnb

One of my top things to recreate a feeling of adventure at home is to build an accommodation wish list on Airbnb.

I have about 30 different wish lists featuring some breathtaking accommodations around the world (think castles, treehouses and yurts).By picking a destination you have an interest in going, you'll be able to see what's out there, get a feel for the pricing and save them all in a lovely little wish list for later.

6. Create a Scrapbook of Previous Vacations

When we travel, we take countless amounts of pictures that we will never (or rarely) ever look at again.

Instead of these lovely photos collecting dust or taking up space on your hard drive, why not create a beautiful scrapbook? This is a great way to rekindle your wanderlust by flipping through old photos, and arranging them in a memorable coffee table book.

5. Learn a New Language

Take a language class! What better way to cultivate the feeling at home of being abroad. I once took a German language course to be able to speak the basics for a one month trip. It was a great way to get me excited for adventures to come.

4. Take a cooking class

Let's be honest, it's one of the main reasons I travel!

So when the urge arises while I'm in between vacations, I take  cooking classes of a faraway cuisine with friends, family or my beau. So far, I have done Italian, Indian and Thai cooking courses and all have let me produce delicious dishes from around the world right at home.

3. Take a Weekend Trip

Travelling doesn't have to be expensive.

When this happens, I stick to nearby cities, take the bus and stay in hostels or even go camping. These are all great ways to get a change of scenery at a low price.

2. Be a Tourist in your own city

I know so many people that have never been to most attractions in their hometown!

So if you're low on funds or time, why not check these out? Start by making a list of the top 5 things you have always wanted to do in your city, whether it be going to a museum or trying out a new restaurant. Then, set yourself a goal to complete at least one of these things every week.

1. Plan your Dream Trip

Travel Essentials. Encircled creates versatile minimalist clothes with the everyday traveler in mind. Each piece is ethically made, out of sustainable and eco friendly materials. This is my absolute favourite thing to do when I'm lusting to travel. I can get lost for hours on end doing research on my next adventure.

I actually have a folder on my Google Drive dedicated solely to my 'dream destinations'.

First, I pick a country/region. Then, I set a realistic amount of time that I would have to visit this place. For example, one of my dream trips is a road trip through France for 4 weeks. Next, I make a list of all the things I would want to see/do, restaurants I would want to try and places I would want to stay. I also try to set a budget for this trip so that I can use this number as a saving goal in my travel fund. That way, if I ever had enough free time to go, I just might also have enough money to go too!

I know that nothing compares to the thrill of booking your flight or stepping your feet on the ground of a new country.

Wanderlust is insatiable sometimes!

However, embracing any of these 10 tips will help you keep a positive mindset until you can go on your next dream vacation.
