With the New Year fast approaching, some of you might already have a list of resolutions you plan on following. Why not add some sustainable fashion resolutions to your list as well, to better yourself and the planet?Fashion is fun, but this New Year, let’s make sure it’s ethical and eco-friendly too. Here are 8 sustainable fashion resolutions we’re sticking to in the New Year to continue embracing sustainable style in 2022 and beyond.
We’re tired of fast fashion brands regularly producing “trendy” pieces that stop being in trend just a couple of weeks later. It’s time to rethink your wardrobe and start investing in clothes that can be worn endlessly, rather than buying into trends. This sustainable fashion resolution entails trying to build a classic wardrobe full of timeless pieces and fashion staples. Investing in versatile pieces that are of good quality and fit you well, will help you get maximum wear out of your closet. Over time you will end up buying less and fewer clothes will go to the landfills.
It’s important to be mindful of your clothing material, since it determines its longevity, how you take care of it, and its impact on the environment. Natural fibers like cotton, linen, wool, alpaca, hemp, silk that are organic and untreated, are comfortable to wear, long-lasting, biodegradable, and tend to use less energy as opposed to synthetics like polyester, nylon, acrylic, polypropylene, and elastane. You can also opt for clothing that uses materials recycled from items like fishing nets, plastic bottles, etc. that would otherwise end up in water bodies, sent to landfills, or for incineration.
Buying second-hand will extend the lifespan of a clothing article that already exists, decreasing the demand for new, retail clothes. Check out the thrift stores and vintage shops in your area for pre-loved pieces. You’ll be amazed at the hidden gems you might find. Consuming fashion this way will feed your impulse buying hunger minus the guilt. It is affordable as well, so you will save some bucks while saving the planet. Second-hand shopping is a fun sustainable fashion resolution, especially if you’re looking to start your sustainable journey in the upcoming year.
Don’t fall for fast fashion gimmicks on social media that offer trendy clothes at cheap rates. This cheap fashion comes at the expense of non-eco-friendly, and unethical practices followed by the company. Instead, buy from sustainable fashion brands that follow ethical practices right from material sourcing to product packaging. Research a brand before making a purchase. A truly sustainable brand will always be transparent about its supply chain management processes. Buying from such brands will also make other brands follow suit and engage in sustainable practices.
We’re all guilty of buying that one item on sale that we didn’t plan to buy. You buy it in the heat of the moment, bury it in your closet for months, and eventually forget about it. An eternity later you find it, only to discover that it does not fit you anymore. Such clothes not only clutter your closet but are also a waste of money. This year, try to shop particularly for the clothes you need. Make a list of what you already own and what you absolutely need to buy. If you intend on buying a jacket, stick to buying just a jacket.
The #30wears challenge urges you to ask yourself the question “Will I wear this 30 times?” before buying a new piece of clothing. This is a pretty easy sustainable fashion resolution to follow. You don’t have to give up buying new clothes, you just need to answer the question truthfully. If the answer is no, reconsider buying. You should be able to get at least 30 wears out of an item before it either falls apart or you grow tired of it. Look for items that can be easily paired with the rest of the clothes in your wardrobe to get maximum wear out of them.
You automatically consume sustainably when you make use of what you already own. Nowadays, you can find numerous videos online on styling a dress in ten ways or pairing different items in your wardrobe to create a look. Step out of your comfort zone and mix and match until you have a couple of outfits at your disposal. You can also upcycle and repurpose your clothes to increase their lifespan. Make alterations or repairs rather than buying new and refrain from buying pieces that are similar to the ones you already own.
Try not to spend anything on clothes for a fixed period of time or as long as it takes to think clearly about what you need. During this time, jot down all the clothing items that you really require to buy. This way, once you resume shopping again, you will have a solid place to start. This sustainable fashion resolution can take some time for you to get used to, but once you do, it can actually feel quite freeing. You’ll be amazed at how long you can go without having to buy unnecessary clothes.
