There's been a lot of controversial debate over whether leggings are pants.
We've been told that only certain body types can't wear leggings. (Not true)
We've been told that wearing leggings make you look lazy and should only be worn to the gym. (We prefer the word "comfortable")
We've been told leggings aren't flattering or are distracting to boys. (How is this my problem?)
To all this we say bah humbug. Poppycock. Hogwash.
Life is too short to let someone else's negative opinions dictate your life and level of comfort. It's 2016 after all.
As such, we'd like to talk about why we love leggings so much and help you see (if you don't already) why leggings are the essential pants for a fall wardrobe.
I personally can't live without a good pair of leggings during the cold months.
It gets cold in Canada - really cold. While wearing some tights under your jeans does help, it doesn't account for the fact that jeans are SO uncomfortable - especially with another layer underneath them.
Cue The Flipside Leggings over a pair of wool blend tights - that's 3 layers of fabric with lots of room left to stretch and move around. Throw on a pair of long socks over (or under) and you've got another layer for extra cold days. Perfection!
A good pair of leggings is also an essential layering piece to add dimension to a minimal wardrobe. You can throw them on under a dress or shorts for extra warmth, or wear as is with a long top. They're a transition piece for the ever-changing seasons.
They're easy to roll up in luggage, and often take up less space than a pair of jeans. They're stretchy which allow you room to breathe and move around as you please.
To us, leggings are freedom.
If you aren't convinced, we've put together 3 very different looks just to show you how versatile a pair of leggings can be.
For a simple and comfortable uniform, leggings are perfect to pair with a pair of flats and a longer slouchy t-shirt. We love a classic striped top. Add on a jacket for when it gets chilly.
A great pair of leggings + an oversized knit sweater is the perfect marriage of cozy comfort. An oversized top balances out a fitted bottom. Neutral colours keep this 80s inspired look fresh and modern.
While you might not be allowed to wear leggings to the office, you can still pull off a polished and professional look. A blazer and booties add some sophistication to a pair of leggings and a white button down.
It's easy to wear legging as pants however it's important to make sure your leggings are of good quality. This means they can't be see through and should fit snug without warping the fabric.
The most important part about wearing leggings as pants is to wear them for yourself. Don't worry about what anyone else things and wear what makes you feel good and happy.
