Get back on track with your New Years' Resolutions

Have your New Year's Resolutions fallen off track?
If not, I'm giving you a virtual high five. If so, read on...

Typically about 2-3 weeks post January 1st is the time when most New Year's Resolutions (NYRs) start to go awry. And by early Feb, most people have unfortunately given up!

Sure, it seemed like a good idea when you created that expansive list of 15 things to do in 2014... but really? Who has the time?

Maybe you wanted to give up red wine, eat healthier, work out more, journal, write a book, watch less TV and drop that toxic relationship. And perhaps instead you drank a bottle of Merlot last night, lounged on the couch with a bowlful of potato chips, crying over an ignorant text from said toxic relationship. Oops.

It's ok.

Trust me. Everyone is guilty of over-reaching NYRs at some point in their lives.

One year, my list had 25 things on it. How many did I achieve? Maybe 2?

We are sooooo hard on ourselves and sometimes we set ourselves up against unrealistic expectations.

So, start with the one New Year's Resolution (NYR) that you'll never regret... to be kinder to yourself.
Yes, you. Sure, be nicer to other people, but start with you.
Happier people are nicer people, so vis-a-visa, you must start with you.

So, Let's Begin Again with those NYRs

Dig out that list you so eagerly created on January 1st, and take a good look at it.

Some things to consider:

  • What have you done so far to achieve the things on the list?
  • Are you taking on too much?
  • Are your timelines reasonable?
  • Are these really YOUR New Year's Resolutions or a reflection of someone else's expectations?
  • Will achieving any of these make you feel brighter? Happier? At Peace? Grateful?
  • Which resolution will have a positive impact on the world?

If you're having trouble answering any of these questions, it may be a good time to revise your NYRs.

To help you, I created a template that you can print off at home or work, and re-write your NYRs.

There is no shame in pivoting your NYRs. Seriously.

All of the top performing companies, and business people adjust their strategy, transform their brand, or change their business model as needed. This could be you. You are pivoting.

So now, dish...

What's one NYR you are dropping right now?
