June 19th is Flip-Flop day, the ideal day to celebrate our favourite travel light footwear!
Flip flops get a bad rap for being not comfortable but personally, I think they've come a long way comfort-wise.
Below is our round-up of our top 5 favourite flip flops for travel. Enjoy.
1. TKEES
Husband and wife team, Jesse and Carly founded TKEES after being inspired by a pair of flip flops while traveling in St. Barth's. Handmade in Brazil, from luxurious leathers, this chic take on a classic flip flop is a must-have.
I traveled across Spain in a pair of TKEES, and they are surprisingly comfortable with their padded footbed. Bonus, they come in a rainbow of colours + textures sure to fit with any travel wardrobe.
2. HAVAIANAS
Believe it or not, Havaianas was founded in 1962, inspired by a Japanese sandal made from rice straw + fabric. They took off in North America in the late 90s, fuelled by celebrity sighting and their fun, bright colour offering.
Havaianas are made in Brazil, and they now have a wide variety of shapes/sizes/colours that are waterproof, so perfect for those sand and surf vacations.
3. BIRKENSTOCKS
Birkenstocks have come a long way baby.
I had a pair of classic birks in high school. Birks have been around in the US and Canada since the 1960s, often branded as 'hippie' shoes but the legacy of shoemaking for the Birkenstock family goes back 200+ years.
The past few years have brought about more modern birks with thinner straps, soles and different configurations. This season Birkenstock released a 'black sole' version of their classic orthopaedic sandals, which has elevated the style to a whole new level. On my list to purchase this year!
4. MERREL
When I was a camper, back in the day, Merrel was extremely popular in the hiking boots category, not sandals. Over the years, they've evolved the brand to bring in new styles, which mesh comfort and technical materials.
These Enoki flip flops are vegan, and use an anti-microbial footbed made from micro-fibre that is padded with an air cushion in the heel, as well as an anti-slip grip on the bottom. While I love the comfort factor, I wish they came in a more neutral colour selection which would make them more fashion friendly on the road.
5. SANUK
Sanuk's company motto is 'never uncomfortable'. Bold statement. Sanuk was started by a free-spirited surfer who wanted to change the way flip flops were made. We're loving the Yoga Sling 2which is made from yoga mats {uhm, comfy!} and is available in a variety of patterns and colour combos.
