Everyone has their go-to v-neck, long sleeve, and LBD that they turn to when they’ve run out of ideas for what to wear. These basics are staples in everyone’s wardrobe, and although they’re seemingly plain, they can be styled so that they’re everything but.We turned to a few of our favourite photoshoots for inspiration for how to style your most essential basics, without being boring.
Play with texture. Wear your T-Shirt with a faux leather jacket to elevate the silhouette and add structure.
WHY IT WORKS
The basic t-shirt pairs perfectly with different textures because it allows for simplicity to shine while adding visual interest. The perfect t-shirt is the foundation of your outfit while the jacket adds structure and personality.
THE LONG SLEEVE T-SHIRT
Try pairing with a long wool jacket. Switch the jeans with a neutral trouser in beige or grey for a dressier work look.
WHY IT WORKS
A light jacket helps transition an otherwise seasonal look into the colder weather! Add winter accessories like a scarf and boots to warm this outfit up further, or keep it as is for mild days.
THE LEGGING
Play with proportion and silhouette. Pair with a long blazer or cozy cardigan.
WHY IT WORKS
The contrast of fitted and boxy keeps it visually balanced. Pair form-fitting bottoms with something oversized on top, or a loose and flowy bottom with a fitted top.
THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS
Try a statement necklace but keep everything else monochrome.
WHY IT WORKS
Little black dresses are a closet MVP. They’re simple enough that they can be dressed up, or dressed down, and the best part? No one remembers that you’ve worn it more than once. Put your accessories and bags on rotation. Change your necklace or bag and you have a new look every time for a night out.
THE PENCIL SKIRT
Pair with accessories. An oversized watch, a chunky scarf, or dainty jewellery.
WHY IT WORKS
Pencil skirts, with their clean and fitted lines, can sometimes come across as very corporate, but paired with a tucked knit sweater cozies up the look. Effortlessly styled and seriously comfy.
THE CREW NECK TANK TOP
Basics carry over every season. Layer it. Throw on a chambray shirt, wrap a scarf around you, wear a puffer jacket, or switch out the shoes.
WHY IT WORKS
A basic like the crew-neck tank top can worn on it’s own or layered for all seasons. It’s a comfortable layering piece without adding bulk.
What’s your favourite way to wear basics (without being boring)?
